Xiaoyan joined SlimPay in 2014 after completing a double Masters in Computer Software Engineering in China and France. Keep reading to find out more about her role as SlimPay’s software development engineer, SlimPay life and why she thinks that banks shouldn’t feel intimidated by FinTechs!
What fascinates you about the FinTech sector?
I have always been into tech, before working at SlimPay I worked at a company that had developed a train-driving simulator used for training train drivers in China, and for a video streaming company in France. I was interested in finding out more about the FinTech sector in France and Europe, as I think it will be a major future market! FinTech puts technology at the core of financial services, giving it potential to drastically change everything within the industry! What could be cooler than that? 🙂
Why SlimPay?
What initially attracted me to SlimPay was the company’s sector; there is just so much potential to be unlocked from the payment market. In addition to SlimPay’s product, the start-up atmosphere has always appealed to me. Despite growing, the company has retained its start-up spirit. We eat together, organise regular events, drinks, etc. We have even organised origami workshops in lunch breaks!
Tell us more about your role and daily life at the company
When I joined SlimPay there were no many of us and my role was quite polyvalent. I worked on developing the solution, bug fixes and improving the back office. Now we are around 15 in the R&D team and I concentrate mainly on innovating and developing the solution’s SEPA payment features.
Describe in one word SlimPay’s company culture

What has marked you most so far in your SlimPay experience?
I honestly couldn’t narrow it down to one experience. I guess what has really marked me since starting is how much I’ve learnt. On a professional level I have really developed my Java skills, and on both a personal and professional level I have greatly improved my French language skills. Before joining the company I only spoke Mandarin and English, and thanks to the team I am now fluent in French! We are always learning here and I love that!
Should banks feel threatened by the FinTech sector?
No, most FinTech startups are providing services that complement existing services offered by banks. Rather than seeing this as a challenge to their business model, banks need to look at this as a massive opportunity!
Any closing words?
Jump on the FinTech wave, you won’t regret it!
